Wolves are, of course, the central feature of Wolf Park, whose staff has been studying wolves since 1972.
We are still learning from these unbelievable animals. Whether it is new discoveries about how much attention wolves pay to the body language of their handlers or simply a new trick to keep a persistent wolf from unlatching a gate, we learn something new every day.
In many scientific studies, the animals being studied are not given names, but rather numbers, to encourage detachment on the part of the observers. Like Jane Goodall's chimpanzees, the wolves at Wolf Park are not only named, but lovingly biographied. Besides helping us increase our insight into animal behavior and husbandry, our ambassador wolves encourage both staff and visitors to reach out and interact with something other than ourselves.
